What is white nose syndrome?
This little bat (left) has a big problem. He has white nose syndrome (WNS). What's White Nose Syndrome? White Nose Syndrome is caused by a fungus called Geomyces Destructans that gets on a bat's muzzle, ears, and wings. It causes the bats to wake up during their hibernation and starve.
White Nose Syndrome was first discovered in a cave in Schoharie County, New York in February 2006. It has been spreading in over 115 caves. mostly in the northeastern US.
White Nose Syndrome has already wiped out 5.7-6.7 million bats in North America. This little bat has 5% chance he'll live, just like all the other millions of bats with White Nose Syndrome. As of now there is no known cure to White Nose Syndrome.
It has already made the brown nosed bats an endangered species. Please help us keep this species alive.
This is an image of a scientist checking a bat's wing for white-nose syndrome. The wing may also show spots of white if the bat has WNS. This little bat's wing looks clear, but if you find any traces of white-nose syndrome, LET US KNOW.
